World Geography Teaching Opportunity
Hurricane Ian has landed and created a 500-hundred-year flood as well as leading to devastating outcomes for many. The hurricane traveled directly over my husband’s childhood home of Auburndale, Florida—hitting a little too close to home. My heart goes out to all affected. I live in the river bottom near a river it Texas. We, as well, recently experienced a 500-year flood. We have four ways out of our area and only one was accessible, the rest under water. Ours challenges were minute compared to what those in Florida are facing. Hurricanes, along with other natural disasters, throughout history have affected millions of people. What causes these weather events? How do soil erosion, seismic activity, air pressure, and ocean currents need to be monitored regularly? How do they lead to severe and varied weather conditions? If you feel led to address this as a teaching moment, while the events have your students’ attention, check out this lesson plan to help you in the process. If you wish to give to assist the Red Cross and help those affected by Hurricane Ian, click here to give. We will be giving.
