How Will AI Affect the Education System & How Do Teachers Work With it?

AI is great! It has made my life a little easier. I use it to help me speed up writing my lesson plans, but I don’t depend on it 100%; I still use my educational expertise — something I have found AI lacks. Yet, the question remains how will AI affect the classroom and the education system. There are benefits of AI, but there are also downfalls when it comes to students presenting their work — when it would be so much easier for the student to ask AI to compose it for them. As an educator, how do you make sure students are not depending on AI to write their presentation and their reports? With all of the AI applications such as AI-Write and Ask Writer, it would be easy for students to turn in work in which they put in very little effort.

Here are some suggestions to work around AI generators:

  1. Incorporate questions with visual or interactive elements.
  2. Assign projects.
  3. Leverage open-ended questions.
  4. Ask students to upload their work.
  5. Use timed assignments.
  6. Schedule frequent assessments.

There are also some steps educators can take at the beginning of the year to set guidelines for academic integrity:

  1. Educate students on the definition and meaning of cheating and its consequences.
  2. Remind students of your academic integrity policy with an honor code pledge.
  3. Consider new ways to deliver assignments to students.

According to Cengage, “Academic integrity has been a fundamental aspect of higher education for years, but with the rise of AI tools comes new barriers for instructors to maintain it. The temptation for students to cheat using AI has grown, making it essential for educators to adopt innovative strategies to combat it effectively.” ~ Published: 11/7/2023
