The canal cuts through the country of Panama and has been a major player in global trade since it opened in 1914. It took only 10 years for the United States to built it. It’s about 50 miles long and features a series of locks that raise and lower ships to different levels as they pass through. The whole operation is pretty impressive, with thousands of ships passing through each year. Plus, it’s a big tourist attraction too – watching those massive cargo ships squeeze through the narrow canal is quite the sight to see!
