Tackling Asia’s Climate Change Issues — Suggested Videos

As a geography instructor, I have always made an effort to incorporate climate and climate change issues when studying different geographic regions. Although these topics and their solutions are often not explored in depth, they have a profound impact. Climate influences nearly every aspect of life around the world, including the types of vegetation that grow in a region and the food resources produced through agriculture. It also affects the likelihood of natural disasters, such as flooding and droughts. I recall one of my students favorite activities that required them to learn the different climates as we sat in a circle on the floor examining a enlarged climate map. They were to choose a location in the world and based on wind and water currents, latitudes, elevations, etc the worked in groups to present a weather report. One of my students work glasses had windshield wipers on it as his region receive a great amount of precipitation during certain months. I will never forget! 👓

Teaching climate change in Asia is crucial. The region is highly vulnerable to climate impacts. It is also central to global climate solutions. Asia is home to diverse climates, large populations, and many coastal and agricultural communities that are already experiencing the effects of climate change.

Climate change education helps students understand real-world issues affecting the region, such as rising sea levels threatening coastal cities and island nations, stronger typhoons and monsoons, increased flooding, prolonged droughts, and heat waves. These changes directly impact food security, water availability, public health, and economic stability across Asia.

Asia also plays a critical role in the global climate system due to its population size, industrial growth, energy use, and natural resources. Teaching climate change in an Asian context allows students to explore how regional decisions influence global outcomes and vice versa.

Finally, climate change education in Asia fosters regional awareness, resilience, and problem-solving. Students learn how different countries are adapting and mitigating climate impacts, encouraging critical thinking, collaboration, and innovation. Understanding climate change empowers students to become informed citizens who can contribute to sustainable solutions within their communities and beyond.
