Permission to Pause

When was the last time paused life and did nothing? Just sat there in the quiet and calmness — no television, books, social media, phone, or other distractions?
Not only as teachers do we wear many hats during our work day — counselors, nurses, motivational speakers, actors, coaches, mentors, mediators, coaches — we also act as our own administrator. Outside of work we have other responsibilities as parents, wives, husbands, friends, volunteers, etc. It is hard to find balance, much less to pause. Teachers are so busy taking care of others that they often put their own physical and emotion health behind everyone else’s needs. While that is admirable, we must ask how long can we continue until we run out of fuel and can no longer take care of ourselves or others?
This is where it is important to practice giving yourself permission to pause, to stop the spinning world rotating around you and to be still in your own company — yes, by yourself. We often don’t spend enough time by ourselves and it can be hard to do so if you are not used to it. Our brains are no longer conditioned to sit quietly because there is always something that needs your attention, and so our brains are always on the go. As you practice being by yourself and being still, it will become easier. Just take a breath because you deserve it!
When we give ourselves some space to pause – we learn to let go of the expectation that we have to do all, be all, and change all.
As teachers, we are often overworked and pulled in too many directions. We often put others before ourselves and it is hard to learn to take care of ourselves. Addressing mental health is part of self-care for our minds, bodies, and souls. Remember, if your cup is empty, you can’t fill someone else’s cup. Here are 27 FREE COUNSELING OPTIONS FOR
